How are the activities organized?

This is a five-week experience where you will be working on three main activities: an icebreaker, a main collaborative activity in teams and an assessment. Following is the calendar for this Multicultural Experience.

calendar-activities

It is your responsibility as a participant to:

  • Keep track of the assignments, instructions from the faculty team, and active participation in your team on the group page.
  • Plan and manage your time and activities in order to deliver your assignments on or before their due dates.
  • Make sure you get your teammates’ contact information and to establish a line of communication with them in order to work on and deliver the collaborative activity on time.

Maintain a respectful, honest and professional attitude towards your team as well as with the faculty team.

Icebreaker: Presentation

October 3 to 9

Post your introductory video

Deadline: October 9

During week 4, you will post an introductory video (maximum three minutes long), in which you will introduce yourself to the group.

Technology: Teams will choose their favorite mode of communication. We will open a folder on Slack for each team, so the team members can share contact information to connect and work on their assignments.

Deliverable: Team members get to know one another and keep a log/journal to record their experience, impressions, and information.

Icebreaker: We will require a short video (3 minutes.) with the purpose of general team introductions and learning about each other. It may be a good idea to have them ‘see’ each other before they schedule a meeting, which can help reduce anxiety and increase the level of comfort.

In the short video, you will include:

  • Contact information
  • Country and university, major, career aspirations/plans
  • Share something personal about yourself: hobbies, food, books, travel, others. Help your group get to know you.
  • Ask 2 - 3 questions you’d like to know about your team members across borders
  • Share your information and the mode of contact you prefer: email, messaging, etc., and propose a platform that you are familiar with (WhatsApp, Facetime, Facebook Messenger, Google Hangouts, Skype, etc.)
  • Respond to your team members and start a discussion.
  • Schedule a time to ‘meet’ and start working on the case study.

This video can be recorded using your computer or any other mobile device, just be sure to choose the option: "Movie: capture video from your camera." Another option is to record your video from your computer or mobile device and then upload the corresponding file, or if you decide to publish it on your own you can use YouTube or Vimeo and share your video link.

Upload your video to the #icebreaker channel in our Slack Workspace under the following title: Nationality.FirstName.LastName.

Examples:

  • US.Mona.Pearl
  • Mexico.Jesus.Lechuga

In this way, it will be easier to identify the nationality of your classmates, which will be useful for the next steps.

Icebreaker: Respond

October 10 to 16

Reply to international partners

Deadline: October 16

During week 5, you will respond to three introductory posts from your international partners through our interaction platform, #Slack.

Follow-up and reply posts to international partners of their teams should consist of a well-crafted paragraph, which seeks, among other things:

  • To identify something you both have in common.
  • Statements or questions with the purpose to establish common ground and get to know each other better.
  • Schedule a time to ‘meet’ and start working on the case study (Week 4). For this, establish the technology under which you will work the business case: email, messaging, etc., and propose a platform that you are familiar with (WhatsApp, Telegram, Facetime, Facebook Messenger, Google Hangouts, Skype, Zoom, MS Teams, Slack, Padlet, etc.).

Students are highly encouraged to ask and respectfully answer the questions of the other partners.

Business Case: Analysis & Dialogue

October 24 to 30

Analysis & Dialogue

Deadline: October 30

During week 7, multicultural teams will analyze and discuss a business case.

Technology: Teams will choose their favorite mode of communication.

We will open a folder #Slack for each team and it is then up to them to connect and work on their assignments.

Deliverable: Team members must develop, by means of the consensus method, an action program that allows them to face the problem described in the case.

Business Case: BRP - Bombardier Recreational Products1.

In 1937, Joseph-Armand Bombardier was granted a patent for the first ever vehicle that can travel on snow, developed in his garage in Valcourt, Quebec, through determination and daring. A second, larger vehicle followed, and he founded his own company in 1942: L’Auto-Neige Bombardier Limité. Over the years, J.-A. Bombardier refined his design, and launched the Ski-Doo in 1959, already powered by a Rotax motor. This innovative product creates a new sport.

Today in 2021, headquartered in the Canadian town of Valcourt, Quebec, BRP operates manufacturing facilities in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Finland, and Austria and their products are available in more than 130 countries all over the world. They had annual sales for 6.0 B USD2 and a total workforce of more than 14,500 people.

The BRP riders can be transported on snow, on water, on the ground, and even in the air. His portfolio of industry-leading and distinctive products comprises Ski-Doo and Lynx snowmobiles, Sea-Doo watercraft, Can-Am on- and off-road vehicles, Alumacraft, Manitou, Quintrex, Stacer and Savage boats, Evinrude and Rotax marine propulsion systems as well as Rotax engines for karts, motorcycles and recreational aircraft. They support their product lines with a parts, accessories and clothing business, to fully enhance the riding experience.

During 2020, their goal was to proactively manage the impact of the pandemic by protecting the employees and the business partners as well as preserving the financial flexibility. They closely monitored developments and public health directives in each of their locations and implemented stringent protective measures. They also reduced their cost base, refocused their Capex plan and enhance their access to liquidity. As consumer demand increased, they supported their dealer network to deliver exceptional retail growth across all their product lines and attracted and nurtured an unprecedented level of first-time buyers.

In October 2019, they launched their Mission 2025 (M25) five-year strategic plan, which rests on four pillars: Growth, Customer Experience, Employee Experience and Lean. However, they are in the process of adapting some of their key initiatives. Further emphasis is being placed on turning new entrants into customers for life and enhancing their purchasing experience; increasing their focus on diversity, equity and inclusion priorities, and further promoting the wellbeing of their employees.

And now, they are entering a new era with electrification. They think this is the normal evolution of technology that needs to take place over time. They have always said that introducing electric vehicles was not a question of IF but WHEN. And that time is now.

1 Business case made by professors Mona Pearl (DePaul - Driehaus College of Business & Kellstadt Graduate School of Business) & Jesús Lechuga (Tec de Monterrey - MGN Online MBA), based on a company whose data is public and appears in https://www.brp.com/en/about-brp.html, to serve as basis for a hypothetical approach to be worked on as part of a multicultural activity within the framework of Multicultural Experiencia Fall 2021. This case is not intended to illustrate an adequate or inadequate management of a given situation.

2 $6.0 B USD in USA => $6,000 MDD in Mexico

Due to what happened during 2020, the year of the pandemic, and the need to adapt some key strategic initiatives, BRP needs to launch an Upskilling program (the process of learning new skills or of teaching workers new skills) and Reskilling program (the process of learning new skills so you can do a different job, or of training people to do a different job) throughout the organization in the locations where it has manufacturing plants: Canada, USA, Mexico, Finland and Austria. This Upskilling and Reskilling will be done entirely online.

For this purpose, it was decided to form a multinational team of 20 workers from those countries (four instructors for each one) in order to give training programs aimed at consolidating, in each manufacturing plant, the four strategic pillars (Growth, Customer Experience , Employee Experience and Lean) in addition to developing upskilling and reskilling in order for staff to be able to turn new entrants into customers for life and enhancing their purchasing experience; increasing their focus on diversity, equity and inclusion priorities, and further promoting the wellbeing of their collaborators and also, they should take into account the change that they are entering a new era with electrification means.

To achieve the above, it is necessary that this group of future instructors be trained as such through a course that will be entitled "Train the Online Trainer" and in order to facilitate this, a task force was formed, of which you are a part along with your teammates, whose task will be to develop a program of actions that covers:

  • How each and every one of the instructor delegations will be received, not only with regard to the logistics and transportation aspect, but also with regard to the first meeting, initial greeting, introductions and ways to handle possible cultural clashes that can be presented.
  • In order to take advantage of the journey from the airport to the hotel (which takes about an hour and a half), plan how the time will be used by having an initial conversation to explain the objective of the online instructor training project and give them a first induction to the program they will have.
  • Prepare, in the way that is considered most appropriate, a diagnosis of needs and expectations that future online instructors bring, taking into account that they come from different countries and therefore, bring different levels of knowledge and work experience.
  • Based on the above, develop the learning objectives of the “Train the Online Trainer” program as well as a tentative agenda of the points it will cover and how they will put it into practice.
  • Your analysis must take into account how the learning and development needs would be met, taking into account the following challenges:
    • Understanding cultural differences
    • Regional-Based Customization (Canada, USA, Mexico, Finland and Austria)
    • Training programs need to be consistent and online
    • Take into account time zone differences
    • How to break the language barrier
    • Take into account the current experience and knowledge of the team to whom the development program is directed

Assessing: Reflection

November 7 to 13

Assessing Multicultural Activity

Deadline: November 13

Reflections

During week 9 and in our Slack Workplace the team members, working individually, will develop a diary of this multicultural experience.

Taking into account that the effects of globalization influence everyone, this journal is assigned to help increase your awareness of global management issues and cross-cultural teamwork, and to help you reflect on learning and on key points in the course content and in particular, your experiences working as part of a cross-cultural virtual team.

Format / Scope

Your reflection should be at least 350 words in length and address the following general points:

LEARNINGS: Describe what you learned about communication: styles of communication, communicating across cultures and communicating in a cross-cultural virtual team setting. Do you find practical applications in your career? Which?

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS: Did you have to develop and/or deploy new skills, tools and tactics to get the assignments done? What do you wish you’ve known before this experience?

CHALLENGES: Describe any team issues/challenges throughout your assignment or any frustrating moments/instances and what you did regarding this. Were there challenges/issues that remained open?
